Study Corridors
FAQ
-
What
is a corridor?
A corridor is a 1,000-foot path connecting Sawmill Parkway where
it now ends at Home Road to U.S. Route 42 near the City of Delaware.
As we move forward, we may suggest extending it past U.S. Route
42, but that decision has not yet been made.
-
So
the Sawmill Parkway Extension will go within one of these four corridors?
That is the intent, although it is very possible as we discuss these
corridors with the public a decision will be made to "blend" some
elements of the corridors together. So the final corridor could
be a combination of these initial, study corridors.
-
How
were these corridors selected?
A list of criteria was used to evaluate the corridor possibilities.
A draft corridor had to:
-
Be
compatible with existing comprehensive plans: Townships and Cities
-
Improve
traffic flow, primarily north and south
-
Be
sensitive to the impact on existing homes and businesses
-
Recognize
potential environmental impacts
-
Avoid
existing structures representing major capital investments, public
and private
-
Allow
for context sensitive design o Allow for developer financing where
feasible
-
Be
feasible from an engineering and cost perspective
- How did you
arrive at that list?
The list was drafted with the help of our Advisory Council and Stakeholder
Group after we discussed the project with a number of residents, including
the more than 100 people who attended our first Open House.
-
So
if I see a house or a building within a corridor I can assume it's
pretty much going to be taken by SPE?
No. First of all, the corridors are 1,000 feet wide. The alignments
that will be drafted for the Parkway Extension and it's corresponding
rights of way will be much more narrow - probably no more than 200
feet. After a corridor is selected using the established criteria,
we will begin drafting alignments within the corridor - and one
of the goals of drafting an alignment will be to minimize impacts
to existing structures.
-
I
don't see a corridor that just goes down an existing road - such
as Liberty Road or South Section Line - Why not?
One of the first steps we took was a very hard look at that idea.
However, it quickly became clear that it was not feasible given
the number of existing homes and other structures that would be
impacted. It also does not fit the existing comprehensive plans
for Liberty and Concord Townships nor the City of Delaware.
-
When will you pick a corridor?
Our plan is to have a corridor selected by January. Depending upon
the progress in gathering additional data, we may also have some
potential alignments ready for discussion at that point. The goal
is to have the alignment selected by next June.
-
Who’s ultimately going to decide where the road will go?
The County Engineer’s Office will make the final determination regarding
the eventual path of the road. That decision will be made based
upon significant input from county residents, other elected officials
and community leaders.
-
Will
the Stakeholder Group and Advisory Council be voting on the selection
of a corridor?
No. Their advice and counsel will be extremely valuable as we move
forward. However, the final decision rests with the County Engineer.
